Hydroclimatic Factors of the Recent Record Drop in Laurentian Great Lakes Water Levels

چکیده
AUGUST 2004 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he Laurentian Great Lakes (Fig. 1) comprise the United States’ premier surfacewater resource, with a basin area of 770,000 km2 (Coordinating Committee on Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data 1977). The lakes cover an area of over 245,000 km2 and contain approximately 23,000 km3 of water. They contain about 18% of the world’s freshwater supply and over HYDROCLIMATIC FACTORS OF THE RECENT RECORD DROP IN LAURENTIAN GREAT LAKES WATER LEVELS

Recent water level declines in the Lake Michigan-Huron system.
Great Lakes water levels have fluctuated over thousands of years. High water levels were a problem in the 1980s, but a recent sudden drop in Lakes Michigan and Huron has caused particular concern, in part because lower water levels are consistent with many global climate change scenarios. We examined water level data (1860-2006) representing Lakes Michigan and Huron to evaluate changes in both ...
متن کاملContaminants of emerging concern in tributaries to the Laurentian Great Lakes: I. Patterns of occurrence
Human activities introduce a variety of chemicals to the Laurentian Great Lakes including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, flame retardants, plasticizers, and solvents (collectively referred to as contaminants of emerging concern or CECs) potentially threatening the vitality of these valuable ecosystems. We conducted a basin-wide study to identify the presence of CECs and other chemicals of interes...
متن کاملDo invasive quagga mussels alter CO2 dynamics in the Laurentian Great Lakes?
The Laurentian Great Lakes have experienced unprecedented ecological and environmental changes, especially after the introduction of invasive quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis). While impacts on ecological functions have been widely recognized, the response of carbon dynamics to invasive species remains largely unknown. We report new CO2 data showing significant increases in pCO2 (...
متن کاملA three-dimensional model of Lake Superior with ice and biogeochemistry
a r t i c l e i n f o The formation of winter ice on Lake Superior has been shown to be important in determining the annual thermal cycle of the lake and long-term trends of surface water temperature increase. However, modeling studies of Lake Superior to date have not included dynamic and thermodynamic ice cover. These physical characteristics of the lake in turn can have significant impacts o...
متن کاملWater Quality in Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands: Basin-wide Patterns and Responses to an Anthropogenic Disturbance Gradient
We present water quality data from 58 coastal wetlands, sampled as part of a larger effort investigating effects of nutrient enrichment and habitat disruption in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Our sampling design selected sites from across a gradient of agricultural intensity within combinations of biogeographic ecoprovince and wetland hydromorphic type and captured a large range in water quality....
